Travel: A Holiday in Scotland

Dear Readers,

Well my time in Scotland has sadly come to an end… Scotland is such a fantastic country. There is so much to do, the history is so rich, the entire country is so beautiful and the people are extremely friendly. I am certain that I will be making many trips back to Scotland in the future. For all the Maritimers reading, from May to October WestJet offers a flight from Halifax direct to Glasgow in roughly six hours!!! So if you are pondering about a trip to Scotland that is a great way to start.

I thought I would share my recommendations for a Holiday in Scotland and my must sees for travelling through Scotland. I was so lucky to get to see a large portion of the Scotland while I was studying this past year. Personally, I think everything in Scotland is great, so you can’t really go wrong! Even despite seeing so much of the country there are still lots of things I would like to go back and do like: the West Highland Way, visit the Isle of Eigg and visit Aberdeen.

Where To Go:

  • Glasgow. Obviously my number one recommendation. Glasgow is such a great city. There is so much to see and do. So many museums, great restaurants, awesome bars. You simply can’t go wrong!!!!
  • Edinburgh. Edinburgh looks like it is out of a fairytale. Old Town is just so neat to see, the Castle, the Royal Mile and all the little alley ways in between.
  • The Highlands. The Highlands are just such a spectacular thing to see, as you drive through on these little roads the hills just surround you.

What to See:

  • A Loch. Scotland is known for their lochs!! Whether it is Loch Lomond, Loch Ness, Loch Morar or any of the 31,460 Loch in Scotland.
  • The Ocean. Take a trip to a seaside destination, whether it is St. Andrews, Rothesay on the Isle of Bute, or you could be even more ambitious at visit the Isle of Skye or even Orkney!!! Coastal towns are so beautiful and quaint in Scotland. I think being a Maritimer I am naturally drawn to the coastal towns.
  • A Hairy Coo. These are the funniest cows ever, you will find them in various locations. You will also find them on loads of items in gift shops!
  • SHEEP. THERE ARE SHEEP EVERY WHERE IN SCOTLAND. Sheep are free to roam wherever they please in Scotland.

What to Do:

  • Visit a Castle. The best way to appreciate Scotland’s history.
  • Go on a Hike. The best way to appreciate how beautiful Scotland is.
  • Go to a Pub(s). The best way to appreciate Scots.

What to Eat & Drink:

  • Scotch: Glengoyne or Talisker, you can visit Scotland without trying one of their world famous Scotch’s. Also if you have the time I recommend going on a distillery tour.
  • Beer: Tennents and Innis & Gunn. Tennents is brewed in Glasgow and Innis & Gunn is from Edinburgh. Two very Scottish and delicious beers!
  • Haggis. The description of Haggis makes it sounds like a very unappealing food, however it is delicious. Usually it is served with “neeps” and “tatties” (turnips and potatoes) and a whiskey cream sauce.
  • A Full Scottish Breakfast. Probably my favourite meal in the world: eggs, potato scone, roasted tomato, mushrooms, bacon, sausage, baked beans and black pudding (I usually skip the black pudding though).
  • Irn Bru. Scotland is the only country in the world where the most popular soft drink is not Coca Cola! I’m not a huge pop fan, so this drink is not for me, but you definitely must try it!

Scotland is just such a wonderful place and I encourage everyone to visit it! I am happy to be home at the moment, but I miss Glasgow every day. I think I am going to have to learn how to make a full Scottish breakfast to make myself feel like I am back in Glasgow… I have already started buying Innis & Gunn beer regularly 😜
