Dear Readers,

This summer I was so lucky to get the opportunity to work on THIRD SHIFT, the contemporary outdoor art festival which takes place in uptown Saint John. THIRD SHIFT is the main event of the year put on by Third Space the artist run organization in Saint John.

“THIRD SHIFT is a festival of public contemporary artworks presented by Third Space, a not-for-profit artist-run centre in Saint John, New Brunswick. Established in 2015, THIRD SHIFT aims to offer citizens a unique opportunity to engage with contemporary art and re-imagine their city. THIRD SHIFT holds space for new experiences and communal exchange through the exhibition of temporary installations, interventions, performances and projections in the heart of Uptown Saint John.”

Myself, along with the rest of the planning committee spent the entire summer planning the magical event. The festival itself took place over three days between August 14th to 16th, with the main event taking place on the evening of the 16th.

I even had a little interview with the local radio station 97.3 The Wave.

For the public festival, there were seventeen different works installed throughout uptown Saint John.  Installations ranged from the Loyalist Plaza, to Canterbury, to Union Street to the Loyalist Burial grounds, and everywhere in between.

The exhibit installed above was called LAVA. LAVA was an interactive exhibit for all ages. Visitors jumped from piece of sod to piece of sod all night long. An alarm would go off every few minutes indicating that the ground was now “lava” and visitors had to be on the sod.

There were two different groups of work on display: The Constellation Series & The Public Installations.

The Constellation Series was sponsored by the Shelia Hugh McKay Foundation, and featured New Brunswick artists. Including: Nathan Cann, Sarah Jones, Amy Ash, KC Wilcox, Chris Donovan, John Edward Cushnie and Collectif HAT. This series was curator by Christiana Myers, the Program Coordinator of Third Space Gallery.

There was such a variety in the work of the different THIRD SHIFT artists this year. Installations included prints, sculptures, videos, photography, a peace march, kareoke at the Tool Library, and so much more.

Just scrolling through these photographs, it is possible to see the magic of THIRD SHIFT that came alive the evening of the festival in Uptown Saint John. Parking lots became photo galleries, rope turned into desire paths, and side walks turned into exhibition space.
